Outdoor Adventures: Family-Friendly Summer Hiking Tips for Active Households

By Kelsey Hokit|

The summer months mean you have plenty of time to take your family on hiking excursions. However, it is important to follow a few safety tips in order to ensure that your family remains healthy and safe during your adventures. Here are our top tips for active households in order to enjoy your summer hiking trips.

1! Pack Appropriately

Be sure to pack appropriately, depending upon who is going on your hiking trip. Although you might be inclined to pack light, you also want to ensure that you have the essential items that are needed for each family member. A good backpack is key to comfortable carrying everything that your whole family will need.

2) Stay Hydrated

Hydration is of key importance when you are hiking in the summer months. No matter what age of person is going on your hiking trip, everyone needs to be sure to drink ample amounts of water before, during, and after the trip.

3) Protect Your Skin

Wearing sunscreen is essential to protecting your skin when outdoors. Be sure to cover any exposed areas of skin in sunscreen in order to avoid painful sunburns.

4) Bring a First Aid Kit

Although it is likely that you will not need it, a first aid kit is a must when out hiking. Even if you pack a small one, be sure to include this when you are packing your bag for your hiking trip.

5) Choose the Right Distance

If you are hiking with people of different ability levels, be sure to choose a distance that is comfortable for the least experienced person. This is especially true if you are hiking with children. You want to ensure that they are comfortable, happy, and enjoy the experience.

If you keep these tips in mind, you are sure to enjoy your hiking adventures with family and friends!
